haha well not to be rude but this is a talent-based industry. If high school kids are getting 1's it probably means they're more talented than either of us. So they're younger than us and better at what we want to do, and they're gunning for the same jobs. No reason to sugar coat it.

the way I see it, we're competing with the past ~4 years of calarts grads that have been working on their skills as well as the current graduating class. And that's just from calarts!

it's pretty daunting when you think about it.

Perhaps you are right... But guess what- those little whipper-snappers ain't gettin' the best of ME! They may have age and talent on their side, but I have hard-headedness determination on MINE!

I have a brother who's older than you, and a sister your age.

You're still young, and you still have a choice.

Don't put yourself down. Just because you're not in today doesn't mean you're not capable in earning a spot, or have less opportunities than we do, yet just because you're older doesn't mean you have more authority.

I'm hard-headed too. Determination got me here, and I think you'll get there through sheer discipline and will to do better.
At one point of time or another, we all face a similar problem or obstacle. The main difference is how we face each ordeal and react to it from future memory, whether the experience be joyous or hurtful.

Hi Tiffany! Congrats on your acceptance!

I like your sketches, was that the sketchbook you submitted or a new one?

Are you coming to the acceptance event next weekend?

And nah, this isn't the sketchbook i turned in for my portfolio. It's not *brand brand* new, but new enuogh. A few months old, i'd give.

Congratulations to everybody who got in!!
(even though some of these are like a million posts back...)
Culture Vulture - it was so obvious you'd get in. you're stuff is amazing. I would be honored to be in the same program as you.
Alex - I'm so happy you got in! Two years of work, you totally deserve it.
Snotferatu - Congratulations. :]
Tiffany - I enjoyed looking at your stuff, even if it wasn't your final portfolio. You've got this really neat sense of proportions...like things are exaggerated, but still sturdy. I skimmed the front page of your blog and you're drawings have this cool effortless feel and there's a lot of cool concepts. Really neat~ Congratulations on getting in!

As for Were-Salamander, theTam, --You know what everyone's been saying. You've got a full year to develop yourself personally which could be amazing if you really try. Best of luck. :]

And hashbrown, jerseygirl, & fingerpaint --hope you can make it in. I second the whole economy bit and how that making wait listing isn't as ominous as in previous years.

Hey everyone,
what was the e-mail/phone number you have to go to to get your portfolio critiqued? Thanks :)

Congrats to everyone who made it in, I'm thinking of trying again myself.

Call Libby Hux or email her at lhux at calarts dot edu, i believe... Just look on the CalArts website. She'll either tell you over email or give you her phone number and then just give her a call.

Question

Postby moonjisoo » Tue Apr 14, 2009 8:19 am

Did anyone submit a flash or an animation with their portfolio while applying for the character animation program?

I submitted some stuff I did in Maya back in 2006. Weight study, a walk, a run. With the Lowman and Hogan rigs.
