Hi there!

15 year old sophomore. Calarts hopeful. I'm a walking cliche. :?

Here's some of my stuff sketched from life:

So tell me how to improve...and I probably will! Suggestions, books I need to read, stuff I need to practice drawing. From here...one can only get better right? :?

Buy Brigman's Complete Guide to Drawing and reproduce every illustration. But don't just copy them, study them. Then get a hold of Walt Stanchfield's notes and do everything he says.

I'm studying a Loomis PDF. Is Bridgeman better?

Agreed. Anyone studying anatomy should have Bridgman's complete guide (the big red book, not the smaller individual series), it's one of the most comprehensive out there.

You're in the right mindset Budda, draw from life, study anatomy, and you'll see some sizable progress!

Thank you. I believe my library should hold it for me. It'll take 2 weeks to process it, so does anyone recommend any good practice techniques or websites? I don't really have access to a model and I know a website isn't the same but it's better than nothing right?

Some stuff from character design with posemanic gestures at the sides for practice and filler! Two birds...

This place doesn't get a lot of traffic, but I am going to post whether you like it or not.

These are some more quick characterdesign.com stuff with more gestures at the side. Just to keep loose. I hope.

I drew a couple of houses from my neighborhood today. Typical California suburbia... :( I wish there were more interesting things to draw. The first is the regular greyscale sketch and the second is just a weird effect that turned out when I made it black and white.

Comments or even better--critiques?

I honestly tried to slow down but there were so many ants where I was sitting. I wanted to just finish and leave.

dude you have a pretty sick art style, keep it up! i'm lovin those tigers. maybe try to introduce a bit more fluidity in your gestures? curvier lines and all that, so you can introduce a line of action without having to draw an actual line

Thank you so much! I'm not sure how to go with the curvier lines though. The line of action is so useful...

Here's some hands I drew today since I need a lot of work on them.

I should be drawing more, but I've just been so busy lately. I did some anatomy studies but they're not worthy of posting...

IS THAT DRIED OUT SHARPIE?
IF SO ILU!!

I really like a lot of these. You have a certain style (god I hate saying that) that is some-what fineartsy, but animationy at the same time.

MY suggestion to you would be to start really focusing on getting the point across. Like, in some pieces, you scribble and it looks like it's because you're not quite sure how to go about something. Just be confident in yourself. If it looks bad, it looks bad. At Cal ARts orientation this guy (im horrid with names) said that it's better to draw a lot of bad drawings and learn from them and that you can't expect everything you draw to be gold all the time...or something like that....So when you're drawing and you see your mistakes, really be critical of yourself and try super hard not to make those mistakes and be confindent in yourself that you wont.

DX that's so abstract sounding.

But um, theres a lot of stuff that i looooooooooooooooooooooooooove here. Seriously. The houses, some of your hands certain figure drawings. You've got a lot going for you IMO.

If at all possible, take some figure drawing classes. As I've found, it's helpful to take some classes. I sorta sucked in the 2 that I've taken, but like... I get better and better the more I draw from life. Take a sketchbook with you everywhere and draw from like. :)

I'm sorry, I type too much. ._.
Yay. Cal Arts........

It isn't. The scan just made it look like that (but maybe that's because I used the sides of my pencil a lot). Sorry if I disappointed you. :( But if you want...it COULD be Sharpie!!!

It's not though.

Thanks!

Yes! I definitely have a scribbling problem. Sometimes I just let my hand go crazy. It's like Parkinsons but I control it. :? Just like the scribble on the guys pant legs--don't know how that got there! I'll get it fixed...I guess a little slowing down and paying more attention to the drawing should do the trick.

This thread is probably only 1/10th of the stuff I draw. Some of them are...err...not postable. I just pick the best of the day's batch, scan, post, then hope for critiques. Today, I got my wish!

I gotta save this part of your post. It oozes truth. If it looks bad, it looks bad! Gotta remember that.

I also gotta look into a figure class. But I'd like to practice some more so when I do get into one, I can make the most out of it. I already have a sketchbook that I take around with me too. I love drawing stuff from life (it pwns pictures any day), but people move too damn much! Stay still dammit.

And thank you so so so so much for the post. It was helpful beyond levels. :D

People need to stay still
fucking bitches. ._.

I found that the beach is a good place to draw people. But it's kinda unsightly. ._.

I love drawing with a dried out chisled sharpie. :)

I know how you are about the scribbly. ._.

I do that sometimes.

Just keep going!!!!!!!!!

Kit: Thanks for the reply! :D

------------

These aren't perfect by any means (wonky anatomy rules!) but they were fun.

And I opened up a Reader's Digest and sketched some stuff slowly to get a hold on my scribbling problem.

I like how the pants turned out...
