I wanna get to know my class. Feel free to share anything!

What blogs do you guys have? It seems like most Calarts students rock the google blogger. But I've been digging Tumblr lately. I get quicker feedback.

Anyway I'm 23 and I've never attended an art school before but I've been drawing since I could pick up a crayon. And then in Kindergarten, Sailor Moon shaped my whole way of life. As I got older I continue to draw but I experimented with my other interests. I performed stand up comedy, wrote and starred in skits, took improv classes, took writing classes (one of them being comedy writing). I took a long break from growing with my art.  Later I would see an animation on youtube that made me feel like a kid on Saturday morning again. The video was the Adventure Time pilot. Since then cartoons like Chowder, Flapjack and Super Jail have fueled me. Since I was young I knew I wanted to make art. I just wasn't sure exactly what. Making cartoons seemed like the best way I could combine all my experiences and skills and I get so excited when I think about coming to the office to create!

I also made my first animated short last year to submit to calarts. It's pretty rough, but it was a great experience nonetheless.

Anyway feel free to add/lurk me.

I'm Victoria Van Patten. I graduated high school a year early to apply for CalArts this year, and since then I've been taking some community college classes to fill up some time during the waiting.

I'm eighteen and I don't do anything other than make stuff. Like... at all. I'm always involved in some sort of project because when I don't have anything to do, I can't handle myself. Can't wait to meet you and everyone else next year. You planning on coming to the new student meeting thing?

    Added you on tumblr!

Great idea! I'm so excited to meet everyone!!

My name is Sarah and I'm turning 21 in April. My favorite kinds of animation are animated musicals and the old WB cartoons like Looney Tunes and Freakazoid. I'm really interested in story design and I would love to be a writer or a storyboard artist.

I don't really have an art blog at the moment (just a deviantart for fanart) but I'm going to be following people on my personal tumblr, and I might start posting art on this blog soon: http://bears-in-space.blogspot.com/

Hello friends! My name is Renee and I will be 19 this summer. I've always loved drawing, but I didn't become interested in animation until I discovered CalArts. I found one of the school's old student films when I was 16 (Adrian Molina's "Unicorn vs. Narwhals") and have been inspired ever since.
Since then, I've taken a crash-course of animation programs/classes. I was involved with a high school animation studio during my senior year and got to work with some fellows from Pixar and Adventure Time, which was a lot of fun. I also got the awesome chance to be a CSSSA student at CalArts last summer (after it was all over, nobody wanted to say good-bye to each other so we all applied to the same school hoping we could be together again!)
I applied to CalArts Fall 2011 and was rejected, so I've been filling up this last year with community college, getting rid of my GE's and interning in the education department of my hometown's art museum.
I'm super influenced by the fabulous works of Yuri Norstein, Satoshi Kon, Suzie Templeton, Kirsten Lepore, Allison Schulnik, and Michaela Olsen. Looking very forward to meeting your talented faces in the Fall! :D

Hey everyone! I'm James and I'm from Hawaii. I'm 21, turning 22 in september. I'm graduating this May with a BA in animation from the university of hawaii, but I feel like my education is still not complete which is why I'm going to CalArts. From my time as a college student, I've come to love story telling and everything about the animation process as ideas are translated onto screen. I hope to one day animate and draw as well as all the other animation greats like andreas deja and james baxter :)

    Hi, everybody!

I graduated high school 3 years ago (I'm 21 now) and after that I made some wrong choices regarding which course to choose. I took this 3 years to find myself and to discover my passion, which didn't happen earlier because I'd never tried to experiment animation due to the fact it isn't that common here. Anyway, I spent this last year learning english and producing my portfolio! I have some scans here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/73189023@N06/.

I'll need help this first year, haha. I'll be the foreign with speech difficulties. I'll be ok as long as no teacher asks me anything. Haha!

    Hey gang!

I'm 20 and transferring from Columbia College Chicago. I wasn't a fan of their animation program and applied to CalArts just to see if I even had the chops to get in. I'm honestly baffled that I got accepted (especially during a record year of applicants) because all of your guys' work is amazing 0_o Right now I'm struggling at being creative, which is what CalArts is really all about...

This is my blog, though I use it as more of a process journal than an actual gallery space because I'm quite contemplative while I draw
    http://lopezkyle.blogspot.com/

And though I made it in, I'm actually in the middle of deciding between CalArts & Ringling. Such a tough choice...

    Hey I'm Tony Unser!

I'm 18 and I'm going from High School and straight into CalArts! I've always loved drawing since I was three and I've been learning and learning ever since! Being an animator has been a dream of mine! Drawing has always comforted me when I was young, and now the only way I express myself now is through drawing because it feels so second nature!

As time passed I did stacks of flipbooks and decided to advance into bigger animations. Then I put them up on youtube to share! I have several shorts of animations and things like that but not polished, mostly rough.

If you're feeling curious here's my youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/1Artistman?ob=0&feature=results_main

Anyways I'm so excited and can't wait to meet you all! I'm definately going to attend the accepted students event! Hope to see you guys there if we recognize each other through our caricature profile drawings! lol

I do have a blogger, so I'll just leave this riiiiiight here! http://tonyunser.blogspot.com/

Alo! :D I'm Sinae and I transfer from Maryland Institute College of Art. I took a year off just to prepare my portfolio since I made a late decision last year about at this time. Tremendously painful it was, but the fact that I'm "still young" made me go for it! haha I'm still 20 and turning 21 the next day of our registration day. I would love to go to the accepted students event, but it's not on my schedule yet... anyways, I prob should tell you guys honestly I wondered how the heck I got into this school, after seeing crazy talented upperclassman's portfolios. It's one question that I must ask when I get to meet andrew ahn later. I live in sunny san diego and just can't wait til I get my cube!! I need to apply for housing asap when the applications are out..

    Hello!

I'm Alex and I'm also going to to CalArts straight from High School. I was accepted into the Experimental Animation program. I decided to go for Experimental because it's less linear than Character and I love messing around with different mediums, but I'm still aiming for feature length movies sometime in the future. I can't wait to have someone teach me animation instead of me teaching myself all the time.

Sorry I never responded! I thought I did but... didn't. Anyways, I'm planning on going, but I have yet to RSVP. I'll probably do so in a day or two.

Hi everyone, it's great to finally meet all of you. My name is Sarah and I'm 23 years old. I currently live in Ontario, Canada. I began drawing in kindergarten and haven't stopped since. Disney has strongly influenced me as an artist growing up. This is my first year applying and I am still speechless that I was accepted. (I heard people sometimes apply for several years). After high school I pursued photography in college and loved it. Its only when I started doodling on my notes during a lecture did I realize I missed art. And although my dream, at that time, was to become a photographer, my love for art outweighed my love for photography. The following year I applied to Seneca College for art fundamentals. The year that follwed I was accepted into animation at Seneca. I studied animation for a year before dropping out to focus on my portfolio for CalArts. I didn't consider applying to CalArts until recently, because let's face it, the tutition is expensive. I just wanted to see if I had what it takes to get in....

Hi everyone! I'm so incredibly pumped to be attending CalArts this Fall! I can't wait to meet some of you, it's inspiring to see so many talented and enthusiastic folks on here.

I'm 25, vegan, and a science fiction geek.

Like a lot of kids, I was raised on, and obsessed with, Disney. I think the first time I started to consider animation as a career, though, was when I was about twelve or so. The SciFi channel used to do this weekly spot called "Saturday Anime" where they would air all sorts of gnarly stuff like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Iria, Project A-ko, etc, etc. My mind was blown and I could never go back.

My more recent loves include The Venture Bros., Superjail, Flapjack (!!!), Cowboy Bebop, and Chowder.

Any other veg folk here? How are you guys going to be spending the next 5 months or so?

Edit: I think I missed the info about a student event that requires an RSVP...? Can anyone direct me to some info on this?

Yeah, I just saw it. It's too bad, I will be visiting the east coast during that time. :/ I guess I'll have to wait until September to meet everybody and see Calarts! I've never visited campus before so I think it'll be a sensory overload for me.

Hi everyone! I'm Stacey and I will turning 18 this April 1st! I was accepted into the Character Animation program and will be moving to CA from NJ! I started drawing when I was 12 in 2007, however I feel that I didn't grow artistically at all until last summer at CSSSA (went for animation program).
Before choosing CalArts, I was choosing between going for illustration, cartooning or animation. I chose animation b/c as a child I had a very, very deep connection with cartoons; I was not familiar with comics at all and I felt illustration limited me on what I really wanted to do (tell stories, but not in just a few pictures!) Plus now I find myself more interested in animation than the other two!
I don't just want to make animation, I want to make stories! You could say I was originally a writer than a drawer; I turned to drawing b/c I found writing was not my forte. Now this fall I'm going to learn about storytelling and animation, I'm going to be drawing a lot, and I'm just so excited! I look foward to seeing you all c: and I have a doodle blog: http://sicada.tumblr.com/
