Hey! I am most definitely applying this fall for Ringling. It's my top choice, CA. I spent the summer at their precollege program and it's phenomenal. The teachers are great and so are the facilities.

Yup! Although I do have to say their illustration program is pretty cool too.

Ahh I've heard of that! I did not get to attend though, but I am planning to take up their Drawing for Animation class this fall. How did you like living on campus? I live about a half-hour away but have not really gotten to spend too much time there.

Cools! I am glad that i am not the only one applying there. Katie, how was the precollege program? What did you do there?
Elizabeth, are you attending precollege there? Nope I haven'r been there before.

Anyway, shall i include the visual development works for CA submission?
  • August 29, 2012 8:32 PM PDT
Nope, the precollege is only in the summer and you get to live on campus for a few weeks. The class Im looking to take is part of their community enrichment offerings, so it is on the campus but only once a week.

That depends, what specifically is within your visual development works? If it includes anything very fantasy-like you most certainly do not want to include it because they are really strict about such pieces in portfolios. Its funny because some of the local art teachers around here joke about it, how the college can't stand anime, unicorns, etc, but they say they love life drawings. So if your visual development includes people and other life-like references then you could probably put some in. At least that is what Ive heard mostly.

The precollege program was amazing. I took illustration and computer animation. They were both extremely challenging classes, but the reward was great. And, on top of that we had to take some of their basic classes such as life drawing, 3D design, 2D design, and form and space. The campus is beautiful. It's warm and it rains quite a bit though. Directly around the campus is kind of "ghetto," to be honest, however, you don't realize it at all. Sarasota is a gorgeous city with some of the best beaches in America around it too! Their dorms are super nice, their good freshmen housing is suite style with a shared bathroom. Their facilities are gorgeous, animation and gameart uses giant PCs but everything else uses giant Macs.

As for visual development, do you mean like character designs and story board sort of previs things? Because they would love that. You just also have to include more of observational pieces that incorporate narration. Anything you can do with an imaginative twist is good too.

Yes!! you are right, Katie. As an international student, I really hope to get a Ringling
scholarship. Otherwise, i won't be attending. *crossing fingers*

Elizabeth: I want to do character design, environment design, prop design, storyboarding and color scripts. Is it enough? Or i do other works ie observational traditional works? Lol, i am not into anime and manga.

I agree with Katie! Those sound great as long as you pair them with at least a few observational / figure drawings. lol You would be surprised how many people actually submit manga/anime as portfolios. But hey, better for us people who know not to submit it I guess.

I'm the guy who started the thread on the conceprtart(dot)org forums. I'm going to be applying (again). I'm applying to the GAD program, but i've been torn between the CA and GAD program ever since I heard about the school.

What does Ringling look for in a portfolio. I know I have seen other portfolios and examples but I am still a little unsure. So is it more academical drawing? Or do they want stylized observational drawing like Calarts? Do they also want some conceptual pieces such as paintings or illustrations?

A portfolio for CA? I was originally told that they wanted to see more realistic less-noticable styled observational, but a few people have gotten away with including stylized stuff. They really just want somebody who is worth their time, quite honestly, you have to show that you have enough technical skills to do tight observational studies but you're also able to do more than one thing well. My personal portfolio included a ton of figure drawings, a still life, some imagined landscapes and a character development/ character turnaround spread that I had done at Precollege the summer before. If it's something you get good understanding for, they love seeing figure studies, because it's something that most highschool kids don't have access to unless they go out of their way to find them (i went for a year and a half to weekend instructor-less open studios in my area before i applied). Ringling has recently become a lot more job-centric. They want people who have an understanding of what they're already doing that they can work with. So, to answer your question: do a variety, but whatever you do do it WELL.

Hey Isaac! I love love love your sketches from your sketchbook and the rice cooker still life. I think if you're going to include figures, make sure that they're really dynamic! When I was there, they really stressed drawing Verbs and not Nouns. So really dynamic poses that convey actions, just something to think about. Also, if you have any more illustrative pieces that you've done from life that convey story they love those too. But overall, it's looking really nice!! I love the page you have of colored characters.
