CalArts. Is it ok to sing?

I like to sing and play ukulele and I was wondering

do animation students get to take music classes if we want to? I would like to join a choir if there's one. That would be so cool

On the housing application, I chose 24 hour quiet hall because someone recommended that

so i was wondering if there was place where I would be able to sing and record songs. Are there private practice rooms available for non music majors?

Thank you so much for your time! : - ]

I THINK you are allowed to, best to ask one of the calarts students on the forum or call admissions

I thought about choosing 24 hr quiet but I didn't...I don't know if i'll regret that

thx Ambar! one of the upperclassmen here said that if you don't go for the quiet hall, you might not be able to sleep. but non quiet hall sounds so tempting... it feels more epic... hahaha.

I never thought that someone would actually ask that question over here .....but I love singing as well, most of the animation students too, I guess .. ? Would be really great to be part of this :D

We have at least SEVEN animation students that I know of (though one just graduated) who play ukulele. Most of them "sing" too.... Though I don't know if I could judge how WELL! XD No, we have LOTS of fun doing this stuff- in fact, I have video of one of their jam sessions. We are multi-talented people. Bring the ukulele! As for rooms for non-majors, I believe you can get access to that stuff. I know a couple of people found the pianos and played whenever they could.

Also- all you poor peeps who chose to NOT get the quiet halls... *shakes her head* You poor poor things... *snuggles into her Quiet Hall*

Nak- let's just say that when it's 5 am and you are just crawling into bed after animating for 16 hours straight and you want to sleep, you have no fear of noisy people (from OTHER programs) interrupting you and that blissfully welcoming, soft, warm bed....

    *is suddenly REALLY sleepy!* XD

I always sneaked into the practice rooms. haha. It's better if you do it late night/early morning when there aren't that many students using them.

This is off topic but does calarts have any sort of gym or yoga or anything to work out at?

We have a "gym" in the dorms. You will need to purchase a key.
We have yoga all OVER the place! Our Associate Director in Character Animation even shows us chair yoga! It's wicked awesome!

the gym.. is small... but not alot of people go so I guess it doesn't need to be that big? It has a treadmill the bicyle thingy the steppy thingy and some weight stuff (as you can see I don't really use it other then the treadmill) and i dun remember a fitness place in walking distance... so you're stuck with calarts gym. It's $10 for your id card to let you in.

There's a yoga class you could probably crash in that's in the main gallery and there's an open to all schools dance class that they have that I hear is good to keep fit! ALSO for music recording if you have a buddy in the music department they can probably give you access to the sound proof rooms and stuff for practice and recording. There is also a recording area for the film school though that is more for dubbing sound(i think.. haven't really used it) I dunno too much but I hope that helps!
