Hi! I'm gonna jump in on this conversation! I'm currently a Junior in high school.
I've been preparing myself since the beginning of Sophomore year. I'm teaching myself traditional animation and doing lots of figure/observational drawings. Working on improvements is my main obstacle. I need a lot of work with my colors and backgrounds.
Also! I'm applying for CSSSA animation program right now! Deadline for that is coming up soon so I'll probably post my drawings after the 28th.
No, I have not gone to any portfolio days. I would like to start working on the actual portfolio after CSSSA so I can add and subtract from that throughout the year.
Am I nervous? Not really right now actually! I've been preparing myself hardcore for this for a while now. I think I'll probably feel the nerves when I'm actually stringing my official portfolio together.
To be honest, Calarts is the only school I'm currently looking into. A while ago I tried to search for other animation colleges in California (I'm staying in state) but nothing really cut it like Calarts does. Right now, if I don't make it into Calarts 2014 then I'm planning to go to community college to finish up the general ed stuff. Which isn't too scary for me I guess, I have a really strong feeling no matter what happens I'll be okay.
I've been taking studio arts classes since freshman year and my art teacher wrote me a kickass recommendation letter for CSSSA. He understands my passion for animation so that's really good. I suggest start talking to any instructors about your passions. If they're anything like my teachers, they'll help try to get you in if they know how passionate you are about something.
Lastly, oh goodness, how am I gonna pay for this?? I'm gonna start working after CSSSA applications. So I guess I'll start there. That's truly what I'm mostly worried about, not my artistic skill. I would hate for me to not be able to attend just because I couldn't get enough money.
I'm currently searching for artist scholarships so tell me if you know any.
Also yay for first forum post!
