After I had sent my sketchbook and portfolio, I received an email stating that "in the next few weeks, you'll be sent a link to see your application status". So I constantly checked my email to see if they would call back. They didn't send me shit! Through out the three months I waited. After hearing half of the site saying that they got accepted, I decided to call the school. Finally, they send me the link and it turned out that I didn't send them my high school transcripts. So, because somebody was too lazy to do their job I was rejected even though they stated that they liked my work. First off, I'm sorry you didn't get in, rejection is a bitch. From what I've heard from current students, they just want to see if you're able to do what they want you to do and if you're able to apply the basic principals of animation into your studies. CALARTS was built intentionally for improving the skills of people who are dedicated to a certain type of art form or media, and are still slightly struggling in their progress. If they just plucked out people who taught themselves to become the next Picasso and CLEARLY don't need any further improvement, they would be doing a horrible job and would lose a lot of potentially paying students.  So, I wouldn't give your hopes up. Your work is amazing and I personally believe that you have more a shot of getting in than I do. Personally, I don't think the main reason a lot of people don't get in is because they only show a portfolio without a sketchbook or they are not willing to pay for tuition. So keep looking up, and if you do get that rejection letter (which I wou...    less

They want to see that the sketchbook is part of your every day life. They mentioned that they like to see sketchbooks with wear and tear, like beat up edges and stuff, to show that it is always with you. This is great to hear. I had just mailed in my sketchbook today and I feel more confident submitting that then I did the with the Slideroom.

  • About Me Once upon a time, there was a small, pudgy faced, youngster who liked to draw. As time went by, he discovered the internet. It was there he found a sea of artists with unique and creative styles of their own as well as their own fan-bases. Unfortunately, he had no knowledge of how they obtained their styles, so he decided to join said artists in hopes of fame and glory. His philosophy was "As long as the drawings are good". Sadly, to his surprise, NONE of the drawings were good. In fact they were all shite on a dinner plate. Mainly due to the fact that, that he had no prior knowledge of human anatomy, structure, form, or any of the basic principles of art. It took a good two and a half years, for other talented artists to show him the error of his arrogant ways. After taking their words to consideration, the boy realized that he had done nothing but waste his time trying to be something that he wasn't and that no matter what he does at this point, he'll never live any of it down. As a result, he grew tired of the walking contradiction he had become and is still running away from himself. Thus, becoming the despicable, horrifying, monster you see before you.

First off, I'm sorry you didn't get in, rejection is a bitch. A very real part of life and art, but a bitch none the less.

Secondly, if you look at scholarship apps or job posting they don't send confirmations that they received all of your materials, that's on you. And when companies get 500+ apps, they'll use any excuse they can find to narrow that number down. You should have called or emailed them after a week or so to confirm.

I never got that email, but I had the link and info from when I applied last year and it was updated with this year's info. But I promise you, if they didn't update it before February, I would've been calling them daily to make sure they had everything. It's on you to confirm.

With that said, the situation sucks, but you probably weren't rejected because they didn't have your transcripts. They've contacted several people about missing transcripts and if the needed that from you they probably would have contacted you. Wait until may and get portfolio feedback from Andrew. Even if you don't want to apply again it's nice to get some feedback for your troubles.

You do make a good point. I really should have been more suspicious about this during the first week of February. But that leaves me with two questions: What's going on in May and who's Andrew?
