Maybe I'll submit one to the Student Academy Awards). I know that evaluations are all subjective but some of you 2013ers that are still waiting have portfolios that look SERIOUSLY professional. I can't help but wonder if there's some secret handshake in all this. I agree-- I'm so impressed by the talent this year! I got an email today that said "We had the largest ever, and an exceptionally talented applicant pool this year," so I guess they're being really specific this year with their acceptances.   I'm seriously baffled by you guys that got rejected-- I feel inferior to some of you! You guys are going places to matter what.   I think the one thing that really helps this year with a portfolio is the opposite of professional-lookin stuff; I was told by the guy at National Portfolio Day that they're looking for moldable potential, people that aren't already locked into a style and don't have their methods down to a T, since they want you to find your voice at CalArts. Then again you guys are seriously good! &n...    less

Also, try doodling like crazy to distract yourselves, it really helps! And I can't wait to do that drawing challenge! McKenna Harris said:aaaaaaahhhhh quick question: does anyone know if AP credits in high school count for anything at CalArts? I know we'll be taking critical studies in things like math and english, and I'm trying to decide if I'm willing to pay for +$270 worth in tests... Yeah! According to their FAQ they do. I remember looking that up last year and thinking their accepting a 3 was really low. I unregrettably signed up for 4 APs this year knowing that. Now whether or not they transfer over for CalArts' specific classes is the question....   "CalArts grants Critical Studies credit toward the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree for successful completion of examinations in the Advanced Placement Program of the College Entrance Examination Board. Students presenting scores of 3 or better are granted 4 semester units toward the Critical Studies requirement for each examination i...    less

So I suppose I'm stuck waiting till maybe Monday where I can email, or till a natural letter comes haha They should have sent an email a while back that gave you your PIN #, password, and a link to the status page where you could check your materials check list. That same status page tells you what your admissions status is! I'd check back in your emails/spam to see if you got anything!  less

in the topic Critique my rejected portfolio? in the forum Art Critique

Well I'm definitely no expert but hopefully this helps:

You're definitely really talented and have a good eye for design! You also have a distinct style/voice developing which makes you stand out. I can totally tell when a piece is yours.

like in this one, your design is super cool:

    http://animatedbuzz.com/albums/photo/view/album_id/1689/photo_id/37223

    Now onto le critique:

One thing I've noticed is your figures feel very stiff. I keep wanting to bend them into the right position and make them move. I'd say focus less on getting the nitpicky details of clothing folds and such down (which seems to be done a lot in your sketchbook) and instead focus on the body as a whole and the weight of the body-- practice getting really loose with brush pens and ink and whatever else you can find that isn't a super thin marker/fineliner.

I noticed the stiff-ness especially on these pages:

    http://animatedbuzz.com/albums/photo/view/album_id/1689/photo_id/36493

    http://animatedbuzz.com/albums/photo/view/album_id/1689/photo_id/36497

Even when people stand, they have their own unique postures, so maybe make standing positions less stiff and find the quirks in their movement that make them different.

Also what would help with the stiffness is more gestures! You may have a lot and just didn't include them or somethin but for the main portfolio, show gestures. CalArts seems to really like those.

Your figure drawings are once again super cool with the designs, but also focus on form and weight. For example...

The shading in this one does nothing to help show the form of the figure. The legs look really flat/angular, and the contour of the figure isn't accentuated with the shadows. Think carefully about shadow placement!

    http://animatedbuzz.com/albums/photo/view/album_id/1689/photo_id/37226

Your shadows on this one are a lil weak too. The harsh shadow under the dude's arm would follow the form of the body, so it wouldn't be completely straight. The weight of his body also feels off in the legs.

    http://animatedbuzz.com/albums/photo/view/album_id/1689/photo_id/37220

Your use of color is neat though. And you consistently show heads/hands/feet, so keep that up! I hope some of that helped!
