I'm James and I'm from Hawaii. I'm 21, turning 22 in september. I'm graduating this May with a BA in animation from the university of hawaii, but I feel like my education is still not complete which is why I'm going to CalArts. From my time as a college student, I've come to love story telling and everything about the animation process as ideas are translated onto screen. I hope to one day animate and draw as well as all the other animation greats like andreas deja and james baxter :)

As a filmmaker you need to guide the audience's eyes with a purpose, you don't want to have them looking everywhere on the screen.

it also helps to study the skeleton, muscles, and internal structure of the person/animal that you are drawing. It will help in strengthening your gestures and drawing in general

I would say keep drawing and with time your eyes will get better at seeing. Try not to scratch the paper so much with whatever medium you're using. I recommend using charcoal instead of pencil since it's more bold and expressive. When you're shading in something think of the shadows as shapes and make sure to fill them in, don't sketch in the shadows.
Make sure to draw what you see and not what you think you see, which is why drawing from photographs is a big no-no to get into most places. You need to work a little more on hands and feet, but it'll come with time and practice :)  less

Also, thanks. Well, here's a brief update: http://crystalperea.blogspot.com/2011/12/brief-update.html I need to retake the pictures, not from my iphone, and I have more to add, but haven't had the time to borrow a camera. If anyone has input, suggestions, critique, anything... have at it. Thanks.
proportions are a bit off on the first one and I'm not sure if the color in it is working for you. Since everything else is in black and white, the shape of the color is the first thing I see and it feels incomplete. Maybe if there was some other color in the drawing to balance it out, but as of right now it feels unfinished  less

I noticed that you have a problem drawing hands. I also noticed that the contours of your drawings are very dark, try to give a sense of that "implied line". You don't have to enclose the whole form in a contour.

I'm a big fan of drawing #14 though...  more
