11 Second Club - August Entry

This is my first attempt at the 11 Second Club. I used this competition to challenge myself animating an acting shot with a quadruped / creature character, with an actual deadline. Deadlines always makes things more interesting

Prior to starting this shot, I spent a lot of time going through all the resources that Daniel Fotheringham posted on his blog (http://danielfotheringham.com/quad-blog-beta/). I used a layered approach to this one, animating first the Center of Gravity, then adding the neck/head movements, then legs (without toes), lastly I animated the tail and wings. By now, I had a solid body mechanics that allowed me to focus on polishing some parts and fix some others that required more attention. Only when I'm happy with the body mechanics is when I spend time animating the toe rolls.

When the body is done, I can go through the shot looking for places where I can add or improve accents for the acting. When the accents are ok, I block and polish facial expressions.

Animating with the layered method is challenging but definitely has it's pros. It worked well for this shot, but I must say it drove me a bit away from thinking the pose itself from the beginning. I was only able to fully see the pose when I added the wings, by the time it came to it, I had put a lot of hours on the shot.
I'm not saying it is bad, just something to keep in mind when using this approach, also, do your thumbails!

I'll upload a shot progression later.

Thanks!
